Charli XCX Has a Message for the “Boomers” Criticizing Her Glastonbury Set: “Yawn”

Charli XCX headlined The Other Stage at Glastonbury on Saturday, and she’s hit back at online “boomer” commenters criticizing her use of autotune and lack of a traditional band.

After Charli’s Brat–heavy set — in which she also literally burned down a massive Brat flag onstage — she took to Twitter the next day to note that she’s seen some of the negative comments coming from attendees and livestream viewers.

“Really enjoying these boomer vibe comments on my glastonbury performance. it’s super fascinating to me,” she wrote, followed by a more specific indictment: “Like the idea that singing with deliberate autotune makes you a fraud or that not having a traditional band suddenly means you must not be a “real artist” is like, the most boring take ever. yawn sorry just fell asleep xx”

It’s worth noting that Charli was up against an actual Boomer on Saturday night, with Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts headlining the festival’s Pyramid Stage during her set. Still, even though Charli has been adamantly defending her use of autotune for years, she’s taking the criticism with a grain of salt. “But to be honest… i enjoy the discourse. imo the best art is divisive and confrontational and often evolves into truly interesting culture rather than being like kind of ok, easily understood and sort of forgettable,” she wrote.

Charli’s Glastonbury stop was the latest festival on her itinerary, with more shows to come this summer at Euro fests like Roskilde, Way Out West, Sziget, and more. She’s certainly kept busy since the release of Brat last year; though she’s aware that the album’s massive success means her follow-up will likely be less highly received: “My next record will probably be a flop, which I’m down for to be honest,” she said last month.
