Charli XCX has filmed a movie in secret in Warsaw at the height of ‘Brat’ summer – find out more below.
Earlier this August – two months after the release of ‘Brat’ – Charli XCX flew to Warsaw, Poland to film a movie in secret as the world was celebrating her latest album. Now, the film’s director Pete Ohs and actor Jeremy O. Harris have revealed new details of the film to Variety.
While rumours of Charli filming something in Poland had made its way onto the internet, it never gained massive attention – some fans thought it was for a music video, while others claimed it was a film but at the time, Charli had not been announced for any projects in production.
Speaking to Variety, Pete Ohs has confirmed that Charli was in Warsaw to film for his upcoming movie, Erupcja (“eruption” in Polish). The film tells the tale of two women and the combustible relationship between them – one woman’s Polish, while the other is a foreigner, visiting on holiday. In the film, Charli plays the film’s foreign lead opposite Lena Góra (Imago).
Ohs and Harris also revealed that the film’s “secrecy” was blown by the musician’s fame: “[Charli] definitely got recognized a bunch of times. She was always really sweet. She took selfies with many a Polish fan…”
Ohs also clarified that the film wasn’t filmed “in secret” because of Charli XCX’s superstardom, but rather because he prefers to work discreetly until the project’s ready for distribution.
Charli XCX’s involvement in Erupcja shouldn’t come as a surprise, given the singer’s previous comments that she doesn’t see herself making music forever and is keen on exploring other forms of entertainment. In May last year, Charli was confirmed to make her acting debut in an upcoming remake of Faces Of Death. In September this year, it was announced that Olivia Wilde had cast Charli XCX in her upcoming film I Want Your Sex.
Last month, the pop singer announced a reimagined version of the cultural phenomenon of the summer, the ‘Brat’ album. It’s titled ‘Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat’ and can be pre-saved here.
The remix record is set for release on October 11, and has so far been previewed with ‘Von Dutch’ featuring Addison Rae, ‘Girl, So Confusing’ with Lorde, ‘360’ with Robyn and Yung Lean, ‘Guess’ with Billie Eilish, and ‘Talk Talk’ with Troye Sivan, plus a spoken contribution from Dua Lipa.
The ‘Guess’ singer has most recently shared that Julian Casablancas, BB Trickz, Bladee, Ariana Grande, The Japanese House, Shygirl, Jon Hopkins and Caroline Polachek are among the 18 guests who will join the remix album.
The revamped album arrives in the thick of her co-headline run with Troye Sivan on the ‘Sweat Tour’, which NME said in a five-star review saw the “former pop underdogs cement their status as arena-slaying icons”.
