Could There Be A Brütal Legend 2? The Game's Developers Are Torn

1 month ago 14

Brütal Legend was released in 2009 and featured a massively metal soundtrack. Brütal Legend had everyone from Black Sabbath and Judas Priest to Mastodon and King Diamond, with Children Of Bodom and Dark Tranquillity thrown in for good measure (and that's hardly scratching the surface).

Brütal Legend was an action-adventure game with some real-time strategy, and was created by Double Fine Productions. The game follows Eddie Riggs, voiced by and modeled after Jack Black, who runs into musicians voiced by Lemmy Kilmister, Rob Halford, Ozzy Osbourne. So yeah, Brütal Legend was metal.

But will there ever be a Brütal Legend 2? According to Double Fine Productions director and studio head Tim Schafer, they're still torn. The studio published a lengthy blog post commemorating the 15th anniversary of Brütal Legend where they noted that Double Fine Productions is still on the fence.

"This Sunday marked the 15th anniversary of Brütal Legend, a length of time which truly alarms all of the folks here who worked on it," wrote Double Fine Productions's Harper in the post. "Time's river claims all things! But if you're lucky, you get to do some stuff which leaves a mark and when it comes to our games here at Double Fine it's fair to say Brütal's got one hell of a legacy.

"My inbox on social media gets pinged every day and I think at least 30% of those messages are request for Brütal Legend 2. Eddie Riggs' tale of heavy metal derring-do has really stuck with fans over the years, and keeps generating new metal heads as time goes on.

They added: "We've spoken about it over the years from time to time. How could we not?"

Harper later added in a quote from Schafer about a possible sequel, writing: "'People ask about Brütal Legend 2 all the time and I'm torn about that,' Tim told me. 'I know some of them want it with an evolution of the RTS stuff and some of them just want God of War with Eddie Riggs. I understand the logic of making the second option, but I'm much more excited about the first.'"

"Chad [Dawson, Lead Programmer] had a few ideas, wondering less about player expectations and more about the vast options that might excite the studio. 'There's so much of a world to explore that could be done in many ways,' he mused. 'It could be an RPG, it could be an RTS. Or even an auto battler!'"

So it sounds more like a "when" than an "if" Brütal Legend 2 is happening, right?

Brütal Legend is 15 year old! That's a lot of time to reflect and think about Eddie Riggs' adventure.

We sat down with Tim and some members of the team to talk about the surprise inspirations that birthed this metal classic!
