Cult Of The Lamb’s publisher has revealed that someone in Vatican City bought a copy of the twisted roguelike game, one day before the funeral of Pope Francis.

Pope Francis died on April 21, 2025 aged 88. Following his death, his body was taken to St. Peter’s Basilica so that “the faithful may pray before his mortal remains” ahead of his funeral on April 26. An estimated 400,000 people lined the streets of Rome and gathered inside St Peter’s Square for the funeral, with a number of world leaders also in attendance.

However, ahead of the funeral, Cult Of The Lamb’s publisher Devolver Digital revealed that somebody living at Vatican City had purchased the game. The Vatican City is the smallest country in the world with just 764 residents living there. Each citizen has to be considered to be influential or significant within Catholicism to live there

“Shout out to the one brave soul that bought Cult Of The Lamb at the Vatican today,” Devolver wrote on X “The personal inner struggle that has to be going on right now is unfathomable.”

“Now you know what they do in the Conclave,” added the official Cult Of The Lamb X account.

Cult Of The Lamb is a celebrated roguelike that sees players take on the role of a possessed lamb “saved from annihilation by an ominous stranger”. You must then repay your debt by “building a loyal following” by starting your own cult in their name.

Last year, the team behind Baldur’s Gate 3 revealed that a few copies of the game had been sold in Vatican City, which inspired an online debate about which of the game’s Dungeon And Dragons’ inspired characters would be the most holy.

The death of Pope Francis caused a 283 per cent spike in people streaming 2024 film Conclave, which explores how a new head of the Catholic Church is chosen. According to Papal experts, the Ralph Fiennes-starring film is “very accurate”.
