Dan Deacon, experimental musician and Baltimore resident for over 20 years, performed a strange, mesmerizing rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” at the Baltimore Orioles’ home game against the New York Mets on Thursday, July 10th.
Using what appears to be a vocoder set-up, Deacon began the rendition by singing the National Anthem as is, albeit with some autotune layered onto his voice. As he hit the second verse, though, he began adding harmonies, culminating in a heavily-layered, almost haunting bridge and outro; perhaps to honor the “O’s,” as they’re affectionately called in Baltimore, Deacon also attacked the “O” in “O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave?” with a growling shout.
Watch a clip of the telecast below, which shows Deacon’s rendition in full. The attendees and players shown in the clip aren’t totally forced out of the moment, but there are a couple head tilts suggesting some confusion or surprise. Either way, it’s a pretty fascinating rendition — how many times have you seen the National Anthem performed like that?
