Dave Grohl admits that he slept on Alice in Chains during the height of their fame in the ’90s, and that he has a “newfound love” for the legendary rock act, even going as far as saying they’re his “favorite band now.”
The revelation came during an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. The conversation came about when Grohl was talking about the incredible vocal abilities of his late Nirvana bandmate Kurt Cobain and late Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell. Lowe brought up late Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley, as well, causing Grohl to glow with excitement.
“Oh my God, dude, here’s the best thing about driving around with [my daughters] Violet and Harper in a car: I have this newfound love of Alice in Chains,” said Grohl. “It’s back. They’re like my favorite band now. They should have been 35 years ago, but now I’m like, ‘Wait, where was I on that one?'”
The Foo Fighters frontman continued, “Every song you hear becomes like a strand in your DNA, those lyrics and those songs become a part of you. There’s a huge connectivity in the energy of music just as there is in the connectivity in the energy of everything.”
Grohl mentioned his daughter Violet, who recently launched her own singing career. As part of Consequence‘s current “Vocalist Week,” Violet named her Top 5 vocalists of all time, and included Staley, saying, “I think he’s honestly an underrated vocalist. I don’t think people give him enough credit for how like truly talented he was and how insane his range was. It’s that raw human emotion that comes out and it’s so guttural and it can make you feel so much anger and sadness and pain.”
This summer, Grohl and his Foo Fighters bandmates will hit the road on a North American stadium tour in support of their brand-new album, Your Favorite Toy. Tickets are available here.
Layne Staley, Kurt Cobain, and Chris Cornell each made Consequence‘s list of the 100 Best Vocalists of All Time. See Dave Grohl’s interview with Zane Lowe in the video below.
