David Letterman: “You Can’t Spell CBS Without BS”

David Letterman has yet to publicly comment on Stephen Colbert’s firing as host of the Late Show and the legendary television franchise’s subsequent cancelation. But Letterman is not so subtly letting his feelings known via his official YouTube channel, where he has post two videos from his own time as host of the Late Show.

The first features Colbert, then a guest on Late Show, roasting then-president George W. Bush during an appearance on June 14th, 2006. Letterman’s channel titled the video simply, “Stephen Colbert Roasts The President,” an all-encompassing nod to the sharp political satire which defined Colbert’s own tenure as Late Show host to ire of Donald Trump.

With his second upload, Letterman took a jab at his former employer, CBS, sharing a montage of moments in which he mocked the network throughout his tenure. “You can’t spell CBS without BS,” reads the accompanying caption.

Letterman hosted the Late Show for 22 years between 1993 and 2015, before handing off the franchise to Colbert. Last week, CBS canceled Late Show with Stephen Colbert, announcing that the show would conclude its broadcast run in May 2026. The network cited a “purely financial decision” as the reason for the show’s cancellation, though some critics have questioned whether Skydance’s pending merger with CBS parent company Paramount — and potential political pressure from the Trump administration — may have played a role.
