Deftones Launch North American Tour with Three Live Debuts and Brent Hinds Tribute: Video + Setlist

3 days ago 6

Deftones kicked off their late-summer North American tour on Friday (August 22nd) in Vancouver, Canada, and treated the audience to the live debuts of three songs from their new album, Private Music. The band also paid tribute to Brent Hinds, the former Mastodon guitarist who was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident earlier in the week.

The show took place on the release date for Private Music, and featured the band performing the LP’s songs “my mind is a mountain,” “infinite source,” and “milk of the madonna” for the first time in concert.

Deftones also played the Koi No Yokan tune “Entombed” for the first time since 2017, dedicating the song to Hinds.

The 20-song set started with the classics “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)” and “My Own Summer (Shove It),” and also featured such favorites as “Digital Bath” and “Change (In the House of Flies),” among others.

Founding guitarist Stephen Carpenter had not been touring outside the United States with Deftones for various reasons, but was on hand for the Vancouver gig, meaning he’ll likely be on board for the entire North American run.

Deftones played another show on Sunday in Edmonton, and will continue the tour through a September 17th show in Kansas City. Phantogram are providing support on the first series of dates, while IDLES will take over as support on the latter half of the outing (get tickets here).

In addition to the headlining shows, Deftones are playing the US festivals Shaky Knees, Louder Than Life, and Aftershock, as well a couple of stadium gigs in Toronto with System of a Down. The band is also set to headline its annual Dia De Los Deftones festival on November 1st in San Diego.
