In 2008, Deftones were working on an album called Eros when a car crash put bassist Chi Cheng into a coma. The album was put on pause, and Cheng died five years later. Fans have long clamored to hear the material, but when answering fan-submitted questions last year for The Guardian, frontman Chino Moreno said Eros was mostly unfinished and would likely never come out:
We’re always asked about Eros. It will most likely never see the light of day. That would involve going back to that period and resurrecting unfinished things, and somehow bringing them to completion. 'Dallas' is the only song that was anywhere near finished. This new album started with ideas we’d been working on alone, through the pandemic. And when we got together to actually start making the record, none of us wanted to look back at those ideas from the pandemic – we wanted to capture the moment we’re in today. So going back to try to capture what was happening back during Eros, and finishing those ideas, doesn’t really make sense.
Unfortunately for Moreno, someone with access to the music has decided to act. The Eros recordings leaked Monday along with demos and B-sides from 2020's Ohms, the PRP reports. Eleven songs are included in the leak, under the apparent working titles "Destiny," "Brenda," "Melanie," "Smile," "Margot," "Candy," "Sable," "Electra," "Trempest," "Diamond," and "Briana." Notably, there is no track labelled "Dallas," which is the only song Moreno listed as close to complete.
The leak has been the subject of much discussion among Deftones fans on Reddit, who are going through the usual debate about whether to indulge their curiosity against the artist's wishes. If they'd rather not listen to Deftones' private music, they can instead listen to Deftones' private music, I suppose.
