Ed Sheeran has announced a new Netflix special, One Shot With Ed Sheeran, from the director of the acclaimed drama Adolescence.

The “groundbreaking” show will be captured in one shot, which has become the trademark of director Philip Barantini, who used the technique in each episode of Adolescence, as well as his previous film Boiling Point.

Barantini will film Sheeran as he travels the streets of New York City, playing his best-known songs in impromptu performances on sidewalks and subway trains, all the while interacting with fans and passers-by.

The single-take special will be released on Netflix on November 21.

Sheeran released his eighth studio album ‘Play’ last month, including the singles ‘A Little More’‘Azizam’‘Old Phone’ and ‘Sapphire’. In a three-star review, NME called the project “a hasty retreat to the genre-spanning of old”. It added: “‘Play’, which apparently kicks off a groan-inducing new series of albums named after buttons on a remote control, just about makes the most of his bag of tricks.”

Sheeran has already spoken about his vision for his next four LPs: ‘Pause’, ‘Fast Forward’, ‘Rewind’ and ‘Stop’, and recently revealed that he has plans for a posthumous album called ‘Eject’.

Sheeran also shared that he “made ‘Play’ and ‘Rewind’ at the same time”, adding that the latter was almost ready to go. “It’s two months off being totally locked and loaded,” he said.

As for when fans could expect his next record to arrive, Sheeran said: “I guess at some point in the next 18 months it will come out.”

The musician has announced a UK and European arena tour for this winter – including shows in Manchester and Dublin. Visit here for tickets.

Adolescence was one of the biggest TV hits of last year. The show, about a father (Stephen Graham) struggling in the aftermath of his son being accused of murder, shone a light on real-world issues such as toxic masculinity and the affect of social media on young people.

It recently won eighth Emmy awards, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, as well as Outstanding Supporting Actor for its young star Owen Cooper, who played the accused teenager Jamie Miller.
