Not only can Eminem rhyme many great words with silver, but the rap god also delivers an impressively compelling documentary. Following its SXSW London debut in June, and a limited theatrical release earlier this month, the Eminem-produced Stans documentary will stream exclusively via Paramount+ starting Tuesday, August 26th. Seriously, what rhymes with “must watch”?
You already know the score: “Stan” debuted on 2000’s eternally great The Marshall Mathers LP, and instantly gave the world a language in discussing and exploring obsessive fans and the complicated artist-audience relationship. (Literally, as “Stans” entered into the Oxford English Dictionary in 2017.)
Directed by Emmy-winning auteur/journalist Steven Leckart, Stans expertly explores the “complicated relationship between one of the world’s most private artists and his massive public persona.” It relies primarily on archive footage and brand new interviews to delve intimately and unwaveringly into “Eminem’s career and the passionate audience that has grown with him.” Plus, we see Devon Sawa assume his role as Stan from the music video as part of the film’s “stylized recreations” alongside interviews with real-life “Stans” that share their own semi-obsessive love for the hip-hop legend. The end result is a cinematic experience that offers keen insight into the unique fandom surrounding Eminem.
“‘Stan’ is one of the most unconventional songs ever written, where the story is mostly told from a fan’s perspective, so this film was an incredible opportunity to find a unique approach,” Leckart said in a statement. “We kept coming back to one lyric from the song: ‘I’m just like you.’ Fans who echo that same sentiment carry much of the film. But like the song, Marshall’s perspective was also essential to the movie. I’m grateful for just how candid, sincere and frequently hilarious he was.”
Stans will then debut in the UK starting Wednesday, August 27th before launching worldwide (that’d be Australia, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria) on October 3rd.
In other “Eminem at the Cinema” news, the Rap God appears in the recently-released Happy Gilmore 2, where he’s not exactly a “fan” of Mr. Gilmore. He also recently became a grandfather — perhaps the little tyke will eventually watch the “revealing, edgy, and disarmingly personal” doc and have an existential crisis about their beloved Peepaw.
