Failure have unveiled the new song “A Way Down” as the second single from their upcoming seventh album, Location Lost, set for release on April 24th. The track follows lead single “The Air’s On Fire,” which was named our Heavy Song of the Week upon its release in February.

“A Way Down” turns away from the late-period Rush atmospherics of their previous single, instead focusing on a dour and gothic atmosphere halfway between classic goth rock and grunge.

Vocalist Ken Andrews takes on a Kurt Cobain-like drawl against Radiohead-adjacent art rock ambience in an emotionally powerful showing. It also furthers the band’s increasing distance from the space rock imagery that typified so much of their early career.

About the song, Andrews said, “Musically speaking, ‘A Way Down’ is an homage to two bands who actually got me to pick up the guitar and try to write my own music: The Cure and Siouxsie & The Banshees, specifically their early 80s periods with albums like Juju and Pornography.”

The track continues the group’s expansion of Failure’s sound, showing an intriguing creative restlessness at a point in their career where other bands might play it safe.

Failure previously announced a spring North American headlining tour in support of Location Lost. Tickets are available here.
