Sprague - best known as the vocalist and songwriter for indie-folk band Florist – developed the album from more than eight hours of recordings captured during Sprague’s 2024 tour of Japan. It draws inspiration from kankyō ongaku – which translates to "environmental music" – and emphasises the sound’s relationship to its surroundings.
Sprague described the trip to Japan with a focus on openness and improvisation, aiming to respond to the spaces, people, and environments she encountered rather than following a fixed plan.“When I began preparing for the tour, I couldn’t shake a sense that the invitation to Japan was more about opening myself up to this new place instead of bringing something into it tightly under my control,” she says.
