Former Hole Drummer Selling Shirt Worn by Kurt Cobain

Former Hole drummer Patty Schemel is selling a t-shirt worn by Kurt Cobain, according to an auction listing.

Julien’s auction house has the  “Foxes” shirt listed. The current asking price is $8,000, exceeding its estimated sale of $4,000 to $6,000.

The Nirvana frontman wore the shirt, which references the 1980 teen movie Foxes, for an early 1990s photoshoot, the listing says. Cobain chose the shirt from a stylist because he liked the film, which featured a young Jodie Foster, and had watched it with Schemel.

Photographer Anton Corbijn captured the band on July 16th, 1993 with Cobain wearing the shirt. The photograph is a well-known publicity picture for the band, and is featured as the banner on their Spotify page. Cobain is also wearing a pair of sunglasses he became known for in the photo.

Cobain kept the shirt and, shortly after the photoshoot, gifted it to Schemel, according to the listing. The two were close friends who bonded over films and a love of obscure t-shirts.

In a letter that’s included with the auction listing, Schemel wrote that in the summer of 1993 she went to Cobain and Courtney Love’s house to pick her up for Hole rehearsals, and while waiting, Cobain grabbed the shirt from a pile of clothes.

“He said ‘You should have this,’” she recalled. It was the blue Foxes shirt.

“We shared an interest in 1970’s and 1980’s teen angst cult movies,” she wrote. “Kurt had the soundtrack. I loved Jodie Foster who starred in it.

“I’ve kept the shirt over the years. It’s a very special piece,” she concluded.

Schemel wrote about her friendship with Cobain in her 2017 memoir Hit So Hard. She was Hole’s drummer from 1992 to 1998.

Love and one-time Hole bassist Melissa Auf der Maur recently announced they were doing some shows featuring new songs, but clarified it wasn’t a Hole reunion.
