Fotocrime Announce New Album Security: Hear “Plowjob”

Veteran Louisville Ryan Patterson started his dank post-punk project Fotocrime after his previous band Coliseum went on hiatus in 2015. Fotocrime is sometimes a solo project and sometimes a full band, and Patterson has kept it going even after Coliseum got back together and put out music under a couple of different names. Last year, Fotocrime released the single "Cautious" and covered Big Black's "Crack-Up." Now, they're getting ready to follow 2023's Accelerated with the new album Security.

Patterson co-produced Security with J. Robbins from motherfucking Jawbox and Burning Airlines, and Robbins also plays on the LP. On Security, Patterson is joined by two new bandmates, guitarist Benjamin Clark and bassist David Cundiff. It's also got contributions from people like former Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg, Napalm Death's Barney Grenway, Young Widows' Nick Theinman and Evan Patterson, Bleakness' Nico and Phab, and all three members of Sumac.

In a press release, Ryan Patterson says that Security is a little more visceral and less synthy than previous efforts, and he frames it as partly a tribute to three of his recently deceased influences:

Killing Joke, Big Black, and Hot Snakes — these were all bands that all had musicians that passed away recently. Geordie Walker, Steve Albini, and Rick Froberg were all so crucial to my musical growth, so I wanted to put these influences forward and channel them as much as I could, as opposed to keeping them in my back pocket and letting them manifest in less obvious ways...

The new album has some synth textures, but for Security we had a different sort of goal. We recorded most of the music live, and what you’re hearing is primarily guitar, bass, and drum machine. So there are plenty of Soviet-era analog synths, but not anywhere near the amount that there has been with Fotocrime previously.

Previous single "Cautious" appears on Security, and the new single "Plowjob." Not "Blowjob." "Plowjob." Completely different type of job. It's a seething, clanking riff-crusher with backup vocals from Aaron Turner of Sumac, Isis, Old Man Gloom, and a bunch of other bands. Patterson directed the black-and-white video himself, and that's below, along with the Security tracklist.
