The first look at the cast in the upcoming Gavin & Stacey special has been shared.
The picture, which you can view below, shows James Corden (Smithy), Mat Horne (Gavin), Joanna Page (Stacey) and Ruth Jones (Nessa).
Plot details have also been revealed for the final ever episode of the BBC sitcom, which is due to air on Christmas Day. Larry Lamb, who plays Gavin’s father, Mick, in the show, recently said that while it’s airing on Christmas Day and labelled a Christmas special, it won’t be set at Christmas.
The synopsis for the show now appears to confirm that, as there is no mention of the festive season.
Set five years after Nessa proposed to Smithy, the final episode will see Bryn (Rob Brydon) “packing the Picasso in readiness for a trip to Essex; Stacey and Gavin are looking for new ways to spice up their seventeen year marriage and Gwen (Melanie Walters) is behaving most strangely. Nessa’s started a new business venture and Neil the Baby’s (Oscar Hartland) about to begin an apprenticeship with his dad.
Meanwhile, over in Billericay, “Pam (Alison Steadman) is stressing out at the prospect of playing hostess, not helped by a newly retired Mick practicing his golf swings in the living room and there have been more ups and downs in Pete (Adrian Scarborough) and Dawn’s (Julia Davis) relationship”.
The synopsis also hints that we may well finally find out what happened on Bryn and Jason’s (Robert Wilfort) mysterious fishing trip.
The episode follows 2019’s Christmas special, itself the first new Gavin And Stacey episode in almost a decade. Co-creators and co-writers Ruth Jones and James Corden confirmed news of the special in May, following leaked reports in February.
The cast officially started filming the finale in September before it was finally wrapped up in October.
Steadman, reccently described the finale as “the best fun ever”. She told The Guardian, “I feel really proud. I mean, the last Christmas special got a huge audience. People stop me now in the street all the time: ‘Can’t wait. Can’t wait for Christmas Day!’ I hope we don’t let them down!”
