A few years ago, the extremely young North Carolina musician Ash Blue Gutierrez signed to Interscope and emerged hyperpop's great teenage commercial hope. Glaive still hasn't taken off as a straight-up pop star, though god knows there's still time. He's doing fine. At the moment, Glaive is three albums deep, and he just turned 21 a few months ago. His last solo album last fall's Y'all. Today, he announces a new album that he made with longtime collaborator Kurtains.
Glaive and the Welsh producer Kurtains have been friends since the two of them were in school, and Kurtains was one of Glaive's prime collaborators on Y'all. Now, they've joined forces to make a new LP called God Save The Three. Lead single "The Troubles," which does not seem to be about bombs over Belfast, is jittery-robot bedroom-pop with a house beat. In a press release, the two artists have this to say:
"The Troubles" came together during a recording trip we made to the Cotswolds in sunny England. It’s a song that reflects the juxtaposition in our lives, representing the tension between our modest yet lavish tendencies. We needed a dance track, so we made a dance track.
kurtains began with the garage-inspired drums layered with soft synth chords, and glaive wrote the iconic hook line referenced in the title and his verse. After a slight struggle for ideas for the second verse, kurtains jokingly rapped over the bassline in a Welsh accent… We laughed, for it felt like magic. This song is inspired by a wide mix of different genres within the dance music realm.
In the Lewis Baillie-directed video for "The Troubles," Glaive and Kurtains pose dramatically together on a rocky beach. Check it out below.
God Save The Three is out 5/8.
