Grimes explained in a colorful conversation with Nnedi Okorafor for Interview Magazine why she thinks AI is the “most dangerous thing that’s ever going to happen” and “bigger than Jesus.”
The interview comes in part as an announcement for new album, Psy Opera, and in part as a reintroduction for Grimes after her divorce from Elon Musk. The artist used the occasion to make the case for her AI worldview.
“We need to be aware of what’s going on, and why it’s dangerous,” she said, or, “We’re going to end up in a military disaster. Will anyone listen to me? Not to be on my high horse, but this is the most dangerous thing that is ever going to happen. This is a bigger deal than Jesus. It’s the same as monotheism taking over the Western world, if not much, much more impactful.”
Grimes addressed skeptics: “When people are super anti-tech. I’m like, it would actually be good if you get into it, because we have… less safe labs because people don’t want to engage,” naming Open AI and Grok as two more dangerous operations.
She also pushed back against some forms of Silicon Valley quasi-spiritualism around these technologies, though her own longterm view is fairly bleak.
“Everyone is like, ‘We’re building gods.’ I’m like, “Why do you automatically assume you’re so much lesser? You’re literally responsible for creating AI. You’re abdicating so much self-esteem and pride and responsibility and agency when you act like whatever AI is, no one has a hand in it.’ And I was getting emotional because we might really go extinct, for a number of reasons. Human life is very frail and time is very long. But I’d hope, if we had good relations with AI, they would take our DNA and make more of us when things get more hospitable.”
And as for Psy Opera, she did not use AI to write it. “I actually don’t use it in my music. People have really misunderstood me,” she said. However, she did make an exception on a song called “DeepSeek,” which includes contributions from the open source Chinese model DeepSeek itself.
