Haim have marked their comeback with the breezy new single ‘Relationships’. Check it out below.
Produced by Rostam Batmanglij (Vampire Weekend, Clairo) and Danielle Haim, the breezy pop track sees the sister trio – comprised of Danielle, Este and Alana – explore the question of “What’s all this talk about relationships?”.
It’s anthemic and danceable chorus sees Danielle sing: “I hear a voice in my head and it keeps asking why am I in this relationship / Baby how can I explain when an innocent mistake turns into 17 days / Fucking relationships.”
The track also sees the band take a more vulnerable approach, asking: “Don’t they end up all the same / When there’s no one left to blame / I think I’m in love but I can’t stand fucking relationships”.
Directed by Camille Summers-Valli, the song’s accompanying music video stars actor Drew Starkey as Danielle’s love interest in a dwindling relationship, while her sisters help her pack her things.
The track premiered earlier today as BBC Radio 1’s Hottest Record and serves as the first taster of Haim’s upcoming fourth LP. A press release says that ‘Relationships’ “offers a contrast to the forthcoming album’s Rock sound.”
To tease their new era, the group previously shared a snippet of ‘Relationships’ in a TikTok clip which saw them dancing and singing along to the song in a bathroom. They also shared the single’s cover art on their Instagram.
The sisters then shared an Instagram post from Danielle’s 36th birthday party last month with a caption that read, “(ha)i’m single.. haim single?”
Haim’s last release was ‘Home’ in 2023 as part of the Barbie soundtrack. Prior to that, they released the one off song ‘Lost Track’, which was previewed during select screenings of Licorice Pizza, Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2022 coming-of-age film that stared Alana Haim alongside Cooper Hoffman.
They haven’t released an album since 2020’s ‘Women In Music Pt. III‘. That album received a glowing five-star review from NME, with Rhian Daly writing: “By breaking from what the world might expect from them and letting themselves do whatever the hell they want, they have produced a record that’s experimental, soothing and vulnerable; it’s a thing of great beauty.”
In 2023, Haim were in London for a massive headline show at All Points East. This also received a five-star review with the sisters making a “huge return” to their “spiritual home”.
In other news, the sisters recently covered Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams’ alongside actress Emma Stone at Saturday Night Live’s SNL50 afterparty. In turn, singer and actor Djo – real name Joe Keery – covered Haim’s ‘Gasoline’ for Triple J’s ‘Like A Version’ series a few days later.
Haim are set to perform at New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on April 27, as well as Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona on June 6 and Portugal on June 14.
