The long-awaited adaptation of the hit video game, A Minecraft Movie is in cinemas now.

The film sees a plucky group of outsiders – Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison (Jason Momoa), Natalie (Emma Myers), Henry (Sebastian Hansen) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks) – sucked into the blocktastic Overworld. There, they team up with Jack Black’s Minecraft megafan Steve to stop evil Pig sorceress Malgosha from taking over the haven of imagination.

A Minecraft Movie also stars Jennifer Coolidge and Flight Of The Conchords’ Jemaine Clement with Rachel House and Matt Berry providing the voices of The Overworld’s various inhabitants.

Who composed the score for A Minecraft Movie?

DEVO’s Mark Mothersbaugh composed the original score for A Minecraft Movie and included nods to the original video game soundtrack. A number of tracks from the video game, including C418’s ‘Minecraft’ and ‘Dragon’ as well as Lena Raine’s ‘Pigstep’, can also be heard in the film.

A Minecraft Movie presented a unique challenge in creating a score that balanced quirky characters with the intense action sequences,” Mothersbaugh said in a press release. “This required a thoughtful approach to ensure the score not only complemented the film’s action but also added depth and emotional resonance, making it a vital part of the story.”

What other songs feature in the film?

Music from Benee, Dayglow, Bret McKenzie and Dirty Honey is used in A Minecraft Movie, as is an instrumental version of Depeche Mode’s ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’, performed by Jamieson Shaw.

Jack Black also contributed a number of original songs to A Minecraft Movie’s soundtrack. As well as ‘Steve’s Lava Chicken’ and ‘Ode To Dennis’, Black teamed up with co-star Jason Momoa for ‘Birthday Rap’ and put together a supergroup for the single ‘I Feel Alive’ – Dave Grohl on drums, Queens Of The Stone Age’s guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen, Jellyfish keyboardist Roger Joseph Manning Jr, and Mark Ronson on both rhythm guitar and bass.

“We had a blast peppering the movie with little musical nuggets throughout our journey,” said Black in a press release. “Me and Jared (Hess, director) went back and forth about song ideas in the weeks prior to shooting, and I’d send him little voice memos. We’d laugh our butts off and shape them to fit perfectly in the film.”

What about the viral song ‘Placing Blocks’?

When it was announced Jack Black would be contributing original songs to A Minecraft Movie, a number of parodies quickly found their way onto the internet. The most popular is ‘I’m Placing Blocks And Shit’, which has racked up hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube. In a full circle moment, Jack Black even sung it during an interview – but it doesn’t actually appear on the soundtrack for A Minecraft Movie.
