‘Hollow Knight: Silksong’ note from Xbox upsets fans: “It wasn’t worth it”

Xbox has shared a new update on the eagerly-anticipated Hollow Knight: Silksong – and fans aren’t happy.

Hollow Knight: Silksong was first announced in 2019. Originally the game was set to be an expansion of 2017’s Hollow Knight but developers Team Cherry later confirmed the scope of the project had changed, and it had become a fully-fledged sequel.

Hollow Knight: Silksong was due for release in the first half of 2023 but it was delayed and still doesn’t have a release date.

Last year, developers were forced to confirm they were “still hard at work on the game” after fans began to speculate that Hollow Knight: Silksong had been cancelled due to a lack of updates from Team Cherry. It was a similar story in January when developer Matthew Griffin reassured fans that “the game is real, progressing and will release.”

Yesterday (March 19), Xbox shared a blog post about its work with a number of independent studios. “Since ID@Xbox was launched in 2013, more than $5 billion have been paid to independent developers from all over the world,” they wrote before teasing future titles. “Looking ahead, our lineup is incredible with upcoming games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Descenders Next, and FBC: Firebreak to play across the whole Xbox universe… and of course Hollow Knight: Silksong too!”

The casual mention of the highly-anticipated game has annoyed a number of fans though.

“How many times must they break us down even further,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “Don’t fall for this, remember what happened last time Xbox was baiting us,” said another. Last year, Xbox proudly revealed that Silksong had an official store page leading fans to believe a release date announcement was imminent but it never came. “All in on bait used to be believable [but now] I don’t trust word out of Xbox’s mouth,” wrote one fan.

“Xbox, I expected better from you. I don’t know how much Team Cherry paid you for this Hollow Knight: Silksong insult, but it wasn’t worth it. Expect a harshly-worded email soon,” wrote Vice’s Dwayne Jenkins.

When Hollow Knight: Silksong does launch, it’ll be available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC. It’s also set to be a Day One Xbox Game Pass release.

In other news, a day one patch for Assassin’s Creed Shadows has removed a controversial feature from the game, following backlash from a number of people including Japan’s prime minister.
