The late David Lynch’s Twin Peaks recently celebrated its 35th anniversary – but how can fans watch the show online? Read on to find out.
The mysterious and surreal show is seen as one of the purest distillations of Lynch’s unique vision, with the pilot episode, colloquially known as Northwest Passage, having premiered on ABC on April 8, 1990.
The show follows FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), who is investigating the death of popular high school student Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), a crime he believes is connected to a murder case from a year earlier.
Lynch passed away at his daughter’s home in Los Angeles after having been evacuated during the city’s devastating wildfires. He was 78 years old.
NME recently spoke to Mark Frost, who co-created the show with Lynch. Reflecting on his time writing with the cult director, Frost said: ““I remember the laughter. We just cracked each other up. Writing is a hard, solitary experience 99 per cent of the time, but this was different. This was two people in a room playing tennis – we’d found somebody who could return-serve, and we could get long volleys going… I don’t want to torture the metaphor! And we had a hell of a good time doing it.”
“We enjoyed each other’s company. When you work like that, the conversation tends to be wide-ranging and involve what’s going on in your life and what you think about contemporary issues and eternal issues; all those things are in the hopper. That’s what I miss.”
How to watch Twin Peaks online
As of June 13, the entirety of the Twin Peaks television saga, including the 2017 comeback Twin Peaks: The Return, will be available to stream on MUBI.
The streaming platform is best known for being a home for arthouse and international cinema, and in March it was announced that they had acquired the rights to all 30 episodes of the original series and the 18 episodes of the return.
Katharina Feistauer, MUBI’s global head of programming, said: “Launching Twin Peaks alongside Twin Peaks: A Limited Event Series is a dream for MUBI, bringing one of the most loved and discussed series in TV history to the platform.”
“Whilst this launch has been months in the making, the sad news of David Lynch’s death only a few weeks ago makes this opportunity to show his iconic work even more special. We are excited for the Lynch fans in our membership to revisit the episodes comprehensively, as well creating an opportunity for new audiences to discover it for the first time.”
