In Honor Of TOMAS LINDBERG'S Birthday, AT THE GATES Are Asking Fans To Donate To A Swedish Cancer Charity

At The Gates' frontman Tomas Lindberg passed away at the age of 52 this past September after a battle with a type of cancer known as adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). He was diagnosed with the rare cancer at the end of 2023, which ended up leading to a surgery that removed part of his mouth and months of intense radiation therapy. While Lindberg was in recovery for a period of time, traces of cancer reappeared in early 2025, and by the middle of the year, Lindberg had been placed in a long-term care facility and was receiving "around-the-clock" treatment. In September, he eventually succumbed to his illness, but not before tracking his vocals for the last At The Gates record.

At The Gates issued a statement following Lindberg's passing, saying that: "Tomas passed away this morning following complications related to his ongoing cancer treatment," the band detailed, "Despite intensive medical efforts, his life could not be saved. Tomas – You were an inspiration to us all. A true friend, both compassionate & sympathetic. You will always be remembered for your generosity and your creative spirit. You will be eternally missed. Forever in our hearts."

Ahead of Lindberg's passing, the band published a letter from the frontman that he had addressed to the public. The letter was written in March and described the health setback he had experienced:

“Hello everyone. I guess some of you may have been wondering why it has been so silent on the At the Gates front lately.

Well, in December 2023, I was diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (a cancer in the mouth and pallet) and have since then gone through a lot, it has been a very tough year.

First there was a major surgery, where they took away a big part of the roof of the mouth. This was followed by radiation therapy for two months, and ever since it has been a long hard path towards recovery.

Now, in the beginning of 2025, they have found some remains of the cancer, and it is inaccessible by surgery or radiation.

So, we will see what the next step is, but probably some form of chemotherapy, to keep the cancer in check.

Luckily, we recorded vocals for the demos for the new album before all of this happened. The last version of the vocals, the ones that will end up on the album, were recorded in ONE day, mostly one takes, the DAY before the surgery, just to make sure we HAD the album, so to speak. So the vocals were actually recorded BEFORE the rest of the album…. a bit different, but it felt good to have it done.

We have now decided to not wait any longer to release this new album. We had first planned to wait with the release until we knew if/when I would be able to sing again, and we were able to support the release with shows.

Now when everything about the future is a bit more unsure it feels good to deliver this album.

It is an album that we all are very proud of, and it's the first time in 10 years that Jonas and I have worked together with Anders writing an albums’ worth of music.

It is a bit more of a return to the "roots", probably best described as a mix between the two last albums we did with Anders (Slaughter of the Soul and At War with Reality).

Hope you all will enjoy it!

Please respect that we don't want to make a big thing about all this, and that I won't be answering interviews concerning the cancer, the treatment or the recovery. We just wanted this to be out in the open, as we wanted to explain to our fans why we have been quiet for such a long time.

I hope you all are well. Take care of yourself, your loved ones and the time you have on this earth.

Tomas Lindberg / Gothenburg / March 2025”

And so, in his honour and to celebrate the frontman's birthday on October 16th, At The Gates have urged fans who are wishing to do something in Lindberg's memory to donate to a Swedish cancer care. Specifically, pointing fans towards an already-established fundraiser with a goal of just over $26,000 ran by the Swedish Cancer Society.

The band posted a link to the fundraiser on Facebook, saying:

"Today it would have been Tomas’ 53rd birthday.

We miss you incredibly ❤️❤️

For those of you who would like to send greetings or contribute to a good cause, please consider sending a donation to the official national swedish cancer fund setup in Tomas’ memory. Just follow the link below.

The band is already a third of the way to their goal after just only two days of the fundraiser.

Wishing At The Gates and their fans well.
