Jack Black has broken a Billboard record in quite literally the shortest way possible. “Steve’s Lava Chicken,” a 34-second track from A Minecraft Movie, has debuted on the Hot 100. In doing so, it has broken the record for shortest song to even crack the singles chart, dethroning the previousy record holder, Kid Cudi’s 37-second interlude track “Beautiful Trip.”
“Steve’s Lava Chicken” charted this week at No. 77 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track comes at a scene where Steve (played by Black) educates his fellow travelers (his costars in Danielle Brooks, Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen) on what happens when one cooks chicken with lava. The crew looks on, bewildered, as Black sings these few, short bars: “La-la-la-lava, ch-ch-ch-chicken/Steve’s Lava Chicken/yeah, it’s tasty as hell/Ooh, mamacita, now you’re ringin’ the bell/Crispy and juicy, now you’re havin’ a snack/Ooh, super spicy, it’s a lava attack.” Black hits a high falsetto for that final line, by the way.
This isn’t Black’s first appearance on the singles chart—or his first song tied to a video game film adaptation. In 2023, his song “Peaches” from The Super Mario Bros. Movie reached No. 56 on the Hot 100.
