James Gunn’s critically well-received take on Superman has triggered all sorts of discussion since its release last week, from debates over its implied political messages to “Wait, is Superman’s super-breath really strong enough to keep him from falling into a black hole?” But on one topic, everyone can agree: Krypto, Superman’s foster dog, is a very good boy (despite occasionally behaving very badly). And fans of the movie are responding by searching for a Krypto of their own.
As reported by The Wrap, since the premiere of Superman Google searches for the phrase “adopt a dog near me” have increased by 513%. Additionally, the search term “rescue dog adoption near me” has increased by 163%, while people searching for “adopt a schnauzer” (one of the on-screen Krypto’s mix of breeds) increased by 299%. It’s a genuinely heartwarming development — though hopefully new pet owners don’t expect their new pups to fly or destroy robots.
Krypto is an entirely CGI creation but was based on Gunn’s own rescue dog, Ozu. Since the film’s release, Gunn has been celebrating Krypto with snippets of cut scenes on Instagram — check out some of those posts below. Meanwhile, Superman is in theaters now, with fewer needle drops than you might normally get in a James Gunn movie.
