My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James always seems to have something going on. Next month, for example, James will take part in a three-day musical salute to director Wes Anderson at the Hollywood Bowl. (The previously announced event The Music From The Films Of Wes Anderson event also includes people like Bill Murray, Beck, Jackson Browne, and Spoon's Britt Daniel, and it goes down July 10-12.) In the midst of his many engagements, James hasn't found the time to drop a solo album in a while. That's about to change.
My Morning Jacket released their album is last year, but it's been way longer since James' last solo LP. In 2018, he released Uniform Distortion and its companion piece Uniform Clarity, and he followed it with 2019's The Order Of Nature, a full-length collaboration with Teddy Abrams and the Louisville Orchestra. Later this summer, James will return with his new solo album Wowed Out, named after his term for constant, media-driven overstimulation.
James produced Wowed Out himself, and he built the album after years of recording with hiis friend Brian Reitzell, a composer best known for his scores of Sofia Coppola films. James didn't know what to do with those recording for years, but they finally started fitting together when he got a rush of inspiration last fall. Lead single "Come Again" is a soulfully psychedelic piano-based rocker with some cool low-end synth action. According to a press release, the song started out as "a cue James composed for a scene set in a teddy bear factory" before developing into something bigger. Here's what James says about it:
"Come Again" came from feeling discouraged by how much things are changing in directions I don’t agree with, but trying to remember that there’s still so much beauty to be experienced. You’ve got to just keep going and keep trying again and again and again to find joy.
