Joan Shelley announces new album & tour, shares “Everybody”

1 month ago 17

Joan Shelley is following up last year’s great Mood Ring EP with Real Warmth, her 10th solo album, which will be out September 19 via No Quarter. She made it in Toronto with Ben Whiteley (The Weather Station) and Jake Xerxes Fussell, who engineered the album. The record also features contributions from The Weather Station’s Tamara Lindeman, Karen Ng, Nathan Salsburg, Matt Kelley, Philippe Melanson, Doug Paisley, Ken Whiteley, and Tayla Bloom Salsburg.

“We had a few windows in mid-winter and it really felt like there was an urgency to capture a moment in time with these songs, performances, people involved, and against the political backdrop,” says Ben Whitely. “The record really feels like a capture instead of a meticulous construction. Part of Joan’s concept was not only to go to a place but to draw on the community of musicians from that place.”

The first single from the album is the lovely “Everybody,” which Joan says is about “The warmth of actual bodies: connection and belonging as opposed to the facades we show each other, in person and also in the lifeless online world.” You can listen below.

Joan will be on tour this fall including a Brooklyn show at Public Records on October 22. All dates are listed below.
