Joe Perry on Aerosmith’s Future: Steven Tyler “Doesn’t Want to… Can’t Tour”

2 weeks ago 9

Guitarist Joe Perry says that while an Aerosmith reunion remains a possibility, a full-fledged tour is probably not in the cards.

Perry shared his thoughts during a recent interview with WBUR, where he talked about the possibilities of Aerosmith reconvening following the band’s aborted 2023 “Peace Out” farewell tour, which was postponed after three shows and ultimately cancelled due to an injury to singer Steven Tyler‘s larynx. In 2024, Aerosmith announced the group’s retirement from the road.

“I would bet that there’s an Aerosmith show left,” Perry said, responding favorably to Tyler’s triumphant performance at Black Sabbath’s mammoth “Back to the Beginning” benefit show in England last month.

The guitarist shared that he and Tyler have been spending time together, meeting up over the summer to mull over the possibilities, revealing that a band documentary might be in the works. But he warns fans not to expect much more: “He just doesn’t want to tour and he can’t tour. It’s tough. I’m not sure I would want to go out and book another 40-city tour. It’s a long way to the top and staying there takes it out of you, especially an Aerosmith tour.”

Perry also pondered the possibility of Aerosmith taking on something less grueling, like an encore of the band’s 2019 and 2022 residencies in Las Vegas.

“I’ll never say never, but I wouldn’t bet on it — no pun intended,” Perry said. “You really have to want to be out there and we’re all at that point of: How do you want to live? How do you want to spend the next however long you’ve got?”

Just last month, Perry expressed similar sentiments about Aerosmith possibly reuniting for a least a show during an interview with Eddie Truck on SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation: “We’re all alive and well, so, you know, we’ll just have to see, you know? I know there’s gotta be at least another Aerosmith gig.”

Perry and Tyler last performed together at a private benefit for Tyler’s charitable organization, Janie’s Fund, in San Francisco this past April. The “Toxic Twins” led a band including Extreme’s Nuno Bettencourt and former Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum to roll out Aerosmith classics including “Toys in the Attic,” “Walk This Way, and “Dream On.”

The Joe Perry Project is set to embark on a summer 2025 tour, which kicks off on August 13th in Tampa, Florida, with the eight-date run wrapping up in Port Chester, NY, on August 23rd. This iteration of Perry’s long-running solo band features Black Crowes singer Chris Robinson, Stone Temple Pilots members Robert DeLeo (bass) and Eric Kretz (drums), as well as a couple of Perry’s Aerosmith bandmates: guitarist Brad Whitford and touring keyboardist Buck Johnson.
