For those who love the music of John Williams — which is to say, any self-respecting cinephile — there’s something to get excited about. The legendary composer will be celebrated this fall with a three-volume Sony Classical release collecting his greatest works to date, beginning with John Williams: The Anthology — Vol. 1 1969-1990, available now.
That first volume consists of 22 discs, collecting music from the original Star Wars trilogy, Jaws, E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Superman, and 18 other films. (Williams, in case you forgot, was pretty busy during those decades!)
In his forward for the collection, director Steven Spielberg (who’s worked with Williams once or twice) writes:
“I have often said that without John Williams, bicycles do not fly, nor do brooms in Quidditch matches or heroes in red capes. Dinosaurs do not walk the earth. Sharks do not terrorize idyllic summer beaches. And Jedi do not return. Without the magic of John Williams, audiences do not wonder, or weep, or believe. Whether in an elegant concert hall or a darkened cinema, John’s music is instantly recognizable both for its emotional power and its ability to tap into our collective unconscious… to inspire us, to captivate us, and to illuminate our shared journey through the human experience.”
Vol. 1 will be followed by the releases of Vol. 2 (covering scores from the years 1991-2008) and Vol. 3 (featuring scores from 2011-2022). The three volumes will culminate in a 75-disc collection. Check out the full contents of Vol. 1, available now, below. Vols. 2 and 3 will be released later this year.
