Jussie Smollett’s Alleged 2019 Attack Gets Second Look in Netflix Documentary Trailer

One of the most intriguing titles coming to Netflix this month is The Truth About Jussie Smollett?, a documentary promising to uncover new revelations about his alleged 2019 attack in Chicago. Ahead of its release on August 22nd, the streamer has unveiled a new trailer, which you can watch below.

Beginning with the January 2019 evening when the alleged hate crime took place, the clip teases an interview with former chief of detectives for the Chicago Police Department, Melissa Staples, who says, “I thought it was a horrible crime at first, until it started to fall apart.”

“Some things kind of struck me as a little odd,” adds former superintendent of the Chicago Police Department Eddie Johnson. “We were going through the polar vortex at the time. Who is out in the street with it being cold out there?”

However, journalist Chelli Stanley points out evidence showing there were white men at the scene, a detail that could contradict the narrative that Smollett orchestrated the attack with the help of brothers Olabinjo and Abimbola Osundairo.

The official logline promises to tell “a shocking true story of an allegedly fake story that some now say might just be a true story” through interviews with police, lawyers, journalists, and investigators who claim to have uncovered new evidence about the case, as well as Jussie himself.

The new documentary was directed by Gagan Rehill and hails from the producers behind previous Netflix documentaries Don’t F**k with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer and The Tinder Swindler.

Smollett has continued to deny any wrongdoing to this day. In May, he reached a settlement with the city of Chicago and agreed to donate $50,000 to Building Brighter Futures Center for the Arts.

This settlement came four years after Smollett’s 2021 conviction, which was overturned this past November in the Illinois Supreme Court over a due process violation.
