This past Friday, Justin Bieber unexpectedly went head-to-head with Clipse by releasing his surprise new album, SWAG, on the same day as their highly anticipated reunion project, Let God Sort Em Out. Over the weekend, he reshared a post on his Instagram Story that praises SWAG and disses Clipse’s new project, as well as their fans.
“Justice is served,” wrote Kerwin Frost, a fashion designer who first gained attention due to his interviews with celebrities including Tyler, the Creator, SZA, and Post Malone. “[Justin Bieber] emptied the clip.”
“This is the only album that matters right now,” Frost continued. “This album is way better than the Clipse. Clipse is for bitter grown men who collect KAWS dolls and shop at Kith and Union.”
Frost later responded to Bieber reposting his message by writing, “Birds of a feather, crash out together.”
KAWS is an artist and designer known for his style featuring the repeated use of the letter “x” on the hands, eyes, and ears. He created the cover art and album merch for Let God Sort Em Out after previously designing the artwork for Clipse’s 2009 album Til the Casket Drops, as well as Kanye West’s 808s & Heartbreak.
From a Consequence perspective, Clipse dropped the better album. Read features writer Kiana Fitzgerald’s A- review of Let God Sort Em Out, where she praises the duo for “setting a top-notch example of what it means to age gracefully into your craft.”
Meanwhile, SWAG received a C+ from Fitzgerald for coming across as a “shallow, commercialized version” of the lo-fi, stripped-down sound of collaborators including Mk.gee and Dijon.
Whether they play with KAWS dolls or not, Clipse fans can catch the duo live on their first US tour in 16 years beginning in August. Tickets can be purchased here.
