The great club and R&B futurist Kelela will release her album new avatar next month, and it's shaping up to be something special. Actually, I have heard it, so I don't need to say that it's "shaping up" to be anything. It's really, really good. You should be excited. But if you've been paying attention to the rollout, you probably already knew that.
Kelela has already shared her new avatar tracks "idea 1," "linknb," and "point blank," and the album also has collaborations with people like PinkPantheress and Fousheé. Today, Kelela shares "outta time," her new song with A. K. Paul, who you might know as Jai Paul's brother and his collaborator in the Paul Institute.
Kelela and A. K. Paul wrote and produced "Outta Time" together. It's a slow, spacey track that reminds me of '80s studio-rock in the best way. Paul plays some liquid Mk.gee/Adam Granduciel-style guitars, and his conversational rasp contrasts nicely with Kelela's acrobatic grace.
In a press release, Kelela says, "I made it in 2016 during the period when I was writing for Take Me Apart. I sat with that song for so long, and it's literally untouched. I waited because I needed to build a house for this song that gives its sound more context." Both artists look sensational in director Ryosuke Tanzawa's minimal video, as you can see below.
new avatar is out 7/10 on Warp.
