After months of rumors that Marvel was planning on rebooting the MCU following the events of 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars, Marvel Studios head honcho, Kevin Feige has confirmed that after Secret Wars is said and done, the MCU will begin anew with some of your favorite superheroes being recast in the process.
According to Variety, Kevin Feige had a lengthy conversation with the press this past Friday (July 18) and revealed that not only will the X-Men film be helmed by director Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts), but that the likes of Captain America and Iron Man would eventually rejoin the new MCU post-Secret Wars via brand new actors. The revelations come on the heels of reports that Marvel’s writers are having a hard time nailing down a third act for Avengers: Secret Wars in which this brand new MCU is supposed to be formed and will feature heroes and villains that are mutants, enhanced humans, supernatural beings (Blade?), and cosmic entities.
With that being said, it’s no secret that the OG X-Men actors from films of decades past are known to be part of the next two Avengers films as superhero worlds will collide, but when the new X-Men film rolls around in the new MCU, expect your favorite mutants to be played by new actors who’ll be a part of the MCU for years to come.
Variety reports:
“We’re utilizing that [story] not just to round out the stories we’ve been telling post-‘Endgame,’ just as importantly — and you can look at the at the ‘Secret Wars’ comics for where that takes you — it very, very much sets us up for the future,” Feige said. “‘Endgame,’ literally, was about endings. ‘Secret Wars’ is about is about beginnings.”
But Feige was also careful not to characterize the changes as a “reboot”; instead, the executive said “Secret Wars” will serve as a “reset” for the MCU.
“Reboot is a scary word,” he said. “Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline — we’re thinking along those lines.” Later, he added, “‘X-Men’ is where that will happen next.”
Feige also hinted that Captain America and Iron Man would more than likely join the fold via new actors once the rumored Mutant Saga kicks off after Secret Wars. He also pointed out how David Corenswet was “awesome” as the new Superman in James Gunn’s latest iteration of the classic comic book character.
We just hope they choose new up and coming actors as those superheroes do not need big Hollywood stars to fill those shoes. As for everyone’s two favorite mutants today, Deadpool and Wolverine, it seems like they’ll be sticking around for a while if Feige has anything to say about it.
“I think there is more fun to be had with both of those characters,” he said. “But we’ll see where.”
