Kevin Parker appears to be teasing a new Tame Impala album: “Been busy”

A new Tame Impala album could be on the horizon if Kevin Parker’s recent Instagram update is anything to go by.

Weeks after Parker debuted a new Tame Impala track during a surprise DJ set in Barcelona, the musician has posted a series of photos depicting himself in various places – in the studio, playing DJ sets, with his wife Sophie Lawrence showing off her baby bump  – alongside the caption “Been Busy”.

The last picture of the collection is a recording progress chart. On it, numerous tracks are checked off with the word ‘done’ written alongside them.

While no new album has been officially confirmed, fans and friends alike reacted with excitement – both about the potential for more new music but also about Parker having a second child on the way. Dua Lipa, SZA, The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne, A$AP Rocky, The Marías and Zane Lowe were among those sending their well wishes.

Parker’s last Tame Impala album was 2020’s ‘The Slow Rush’, with an EP of B-sides and remixes coming out two years later. In 2023, Parker and Thundercat collaborated on the standalone single ‘No More Lies’, while Parker has also featured on songs from Diana Ross, Gorillaz and Justice over the past couple of years. He won his first Grammy earlier this year for ‘Neverender’, one of his Justice collaborations, and he’s set to be one of the opening DJs on their Australian tour later this year.

He also worked closely with Lipa on her 2024 album ‘Radical Optimism‘. The singer recorded some of the album at his home studio in Los Angeles, while he also co-produced it.

After he played Barcelona’s Primavera Sound last month, he dropped by Nitsa Club for a surprise DJ set the following night. “Er, you guys wanna hear a new song?” he asked the crowd. “You want to hear a new Tame Impala song? You’re going to be the first ones to hear it, you realise. There’s no going back from this point on. Alright, let’s do it. Get comfortable.”

He then played the still-unnamed track – watch a clip here:

NME gave ‘The Slow Rush’ a four-star review, writing: “As far as follow-ups to an earth-shattering run of albums go, though this is much more than just a solid return. It is, overall, an exhilarating listen. Tame Impala are unlikely to lose any fans by embracing Parker’s pop sensibilities – genres are history, man – but you have to admire their wilful desire to push into new directions. This band aren’t rock music’s saviours; they’re so much more than that.”
