Kevin Spacey, Guest on Jeffrey Epstein’s Plane, Calls for Release of Epstein Files

Kevin Spacey, who walked away from a cloud of sexual assault allegations and a surprising number of dead bodies with his freedom, if not his fortune, is calling for the release of “the Epstein files,” because oh that’s right, his name also appeared in the Epstein flight logs.

“Release the Epstein files,” Spacey posted on July 15th. “All of them. For those of us with nothing to fear, the truth can’t come soon enough.”

You might think this whole thing couldn’t get any more absurd, but we’re just getting started. The actor, who was fired from House of Cards and then spent years making in-character Christmas videos (remember “Let me be Frank?”) added in his online statement, “I hate to make this about me — but the media already has.”

To be clear, there’s probably nothing in the Epstein files that would incriminate Spacey — or really any such thing as “the Epstein files.”

It started as a reference to dozens of documents from a 2015 court case against Maxwell, which includes descriptions of about 150 different Epstein associates, including Clintons, Trumps, at least on Prince, and more. But mainly it told a consistent and disturbing story — of how Maxwell or other associates would recruit girls, some as young as 14, for jobs like giving Epstein a massage. He then forced the encounter in a sexual direction, and often offered the girls money to recruit their friends.

The flight logs were already public during the Ghislaine Maxwell trial in 2021. Epstein’s pilot testified that Spacey was among the many politicians, celebrities, and other famous personalities loaned access to the financier’s plane. The victims, witnesses, and prosecution painted Epstein as a man who used favors and connections to shield himself from justice — a horrible monster at the massage table, but not a pimp.

But conspiracies around a global cabal of pedophiles continue to circulate, spurred in recent years by conservative politicians including J.D. Vance, who tweeted in 2021, “Remember when we learned that our wealthiest and most powerful people were connected to a guy who ran a literal child sex trafficking ring? And then that guy died mysteriously in a jail? And now we just don’t talk about it.”

The idea that all of the people you don’t like also happen to be child abusers is apparently a seductive one. But the mental gymnastics are getting harder to land now that Trump and Vance are in power, leading to tension between Trump lieutenants Kash Patel and Pam Bondi, lots of memes, and now a right-wing meltdown.

And Spacey is still doing his Frank Underwood impression, happy to talk about conspiracy theories if it furthers his comeback. It probably won’t work in this finicky age when even Tom Cruise blockbusters are hit-or-miss and George Clooney is doing Broadway. But if Kevin Spacey wants to remind film studios and the world’s most deranged conspiracists that his name should be associated with Epstein’s, hey, it’s a free country.

Release the Epstein files. All of them. For those of us with nothing to fear, the truth can’t come soon enough.

I hate to make this about me — but the media already has.
