Kim Gordon Remakes “BYE BYE” into Trump Protest Song: Stream

Kim Gordon has reworked “BYE BYE,” the lead single from her 2024 album, The Collective, into a protest song against President Donald Trump’s policies. Stream it below.

Titled “BYE BYE 25!,” the grinding and bass-heavy remake substitutes Gordon’s original lyrics — a packing list for an upcoming trip — for words that the current administration has flagged and used to cancel grant projects or research proposals. These words include advocate, climate change, female, Hispanic, immigrants, mental health, trauma, uterus, victim, and women.

“(Producer and collaborator) Justin Raisen had this idea to redo ‘Bye Bye’ starting at the end of the song,” Gordon explained in a statement. “When I was thinking of lyric ideas it occurred to me to use words taken from a site that had all the words that Trump has essentially banned, meaning any grant or piece of a project or proposal for research that includes any of those words would be immediately disregarded or ‘cancelled.’ I guess Trump does believe in cancel culture. Because he is literally trying to cancel culture.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and NASA are among the organizations that have been impacted by the current administration’s policies.

“BYE BYE 25!” arrives with a music video directed by Vice Cooler and Kim Gordon. Watch it below.

Proceeds from the track and its accompanying t-shirt will benefit NOISE FOR NOW, a reproductive rights nonprofit that enables artists and entertainers to connect with and financially support grassroots organizations that work in the field of reproductive health, rights, and justice.

The original version of “BYE BYE” was named Consequence’s Song of the Week when it was released in January 2024. It later made our list of the 200 Best Songs of 2024.

Meanwhile, Gordon also recently announced a 10th anniversary edition of her memoir, Girl in a Band, due out on September 9th (pre-order here).
