Lil Nas X has given a hopeful update on his mental health in an Instagram video, opening up about his diagnosis with bipolar disorder and the process of going through court-mandated rehab and therapy.

“I’ve been in rehab for a few months, and since then I’ve been back at home, whether it’s in Atlanta with my family or in Los Angeles with myself, friends, and whatnot, and trying to ground myself down to earth and get out of my head,” the artist began. “I have a therapist now and a psychiatrist, which has been really helpful.”

The rapper continued by saying he had an intuition about being bipolar “for the past few years,” but didn’t want to “admit to it ’cause I didn’t want to have to take medication and have people think differently of me.”

“I’m already Black and gay. Like, damn God,” Lil Nas X laughed. “Come on, Black, gay, bipolar? I’m living life on extreme hard mode.”

Adding that he was “feeling better” and creating freely with “less fear in my heart,” the musician said he was finally “smelling the roses” after being focused on music for seven years.

Lil Nas X closed out the video by teasing that there is “new music on the way,” and expressed his excitement to embark on his next chapter with his loyal fans, the Montourage. “Thank you, guys, for holding me down, and I love you, and all I wanna do is continue to try to make you proud and make myself proud.”

In August 2025, Lil Nas X was arrested following an incident when he was walking nearly naked in LA’s Studio City neighborhood. He was accused of assaulting and injuring responding officers and subsequently charged with three counts of battery and one count of resisting arrest.

He voluntarily entered a mental health treatment program following the arrest. This April, a judge determined the incident was linked to Lil Nas X’s bipolar diagnosis and ruled that his charges would be dropped if he complied with the program and obeyed all laws for the next two years.
