Limp Bizkit hasn't released new music since their 2021 LP, STILL SUCKS, until this past Friday (12th September), when they dropped their brand new single, "Making Love To Morgan Wallen." Which actually has very little to do with the controversial country singer, rather at first, it has a little more to do with the late vocalist of Linkin Park, Chester Bennington.
Within the first three lines, the song shouts out Bennington, stating, "Damn, I miss you, Chester / Sending love from a bass compressor / (Love you)."
And while it's definitely unusual to put those sentiments in a Limp Bizkit song of all things, Bennington and Limp Bizkit vocalist Fred Durst had a pretty notable friendship, going back as early as the 2000s.
It's partially explained by both Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit's rap-rock success occurring around the same time, but also due to the mutual appreciation they had for each other as people, further explained by Durst in a statement given to Variety after Chester Bennington's passing. Part of the statement read:
"In my last conversation with him, he was holding his two cute puppies and giving me the most selfless and motivational compliments in regards to Limp Bizkit and myself and thanking me for paving the path for bands like Linkin Park.
In return, I told him if it weren’t for him and his voice and his words, this genre would never have reached the masses and affected so many lives. I thanked him for being so courageous and humble and for always being such a gentleman.
And it's almost like Limp Bizkit can't be vulnerable for too long – they're immune to it – because despite the touching aspect of the first few lines, the band launches into the more carefree and lyrically abstract approach to music that they're known for, bouncing around rhymes like "pirate band" and "lobster hand" as well as "bowling pin" and "dolphin fin" – or, saying that he's "doin' backflips on a candy cane" – all in the same verse as referencing Bennington.
And, Durst tops the entire verse off with a lovely, meaningful: "I blink twice, then I teleport / Got kicked out of the Trump resort (What?) / Bought this cloud on a payment plan / Then I ghosted out in a minivan / Mic in my hand like a waffle cone / Spittin' out syrup in the Twilight Zone."
Right.
But, the Morgan Wallen reference that calls for the track's title, "Making Love To Morgan Wallen" isn't until the song's outro, as Durst pens, "I make this motherfucker diamond-plated / Makin' love to Morgan Wallen in an elevator / I'll be turnin' on you bitches like a generator / I'll be the greatest motherfucker that you ever hated."
None of the aspects of "Makin' love to Morgan Wallen in an elevator" sounds particularly appealing, but the song is pretty catchy and pretty dumb and that's part of Limp Bizkit's charm.
