Guitarist Lita Ford was not pleased with the 2010 biopic The Runaways, saying it wasn’t an accurate depiction of her former band of the same name, while adding she’s no fan of ex-bandmate Joan Jett or actress Kristen Stewart (who played Jett in the movie).
The film starred Dakota Fanning as singer Cherie Currie, Scout Taylor-Compton as Ford, and Stewart as Jett, with most of the attention focused on Currie and Jett, as well as manager Kim Fowley (played by Michael Shannon).
In a new interview with The Boom Boom Room, hosted by former boxer Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Ford reflected on the movie. “I felt that The Runaways movie was all about Joan, and the stories that they told about Joan were just not accurate,” said Ford (as transcribed by Blabbermouth). “They really made her to look larger than life. And I just didn’t agree with any of it.”
She continued, “I love Scout Taylor Compton. I thought she did a fantastic job playing Lita and that she’s a really great person and great actress. And I love that they picked Scout for that role. And Scout had reached out to me multiple times, ‘Lita, help me with this’ and ‘help me with that’. And then, of course, they had Kristen Stewart playing Joan Jett. And Kristen Stewart is not one of my favorite people, and neither is Joan Jett.”
Ford concluded, “The movie is just kind of, for me in my book, I glanced over it when it first came out and just thought, ‘Okay, I’ve seen it. I’m done. I don’t ever wanna see it again. Yeah, I would’ve done it different. But maybe I will one day.”
Following their stints in The Runaways, Ford and Jett both went on to successful solo careers, and are each touring extensively this year. Ford has dates scheduled all the way through November, with tickets available here. Jett, meanwhile, will embark on a second leg of tour dates with Billy Idol in the summer (pick up tickets here).
