Lorde has shared another new single, ‘Hammer’ – you can listen to it below.
The hazy, euphoric song is the final preview of the Kiwi singer-songwriter’s fourth studio album, ‘Virgin’, which is out next Friday (June 27). She previously described the track – which is the opener of her imminent LP – as “an ode to city life and horniness”.
“There’s a heat in the pavement, my mercury’s raising/ Don’t know if it’s love or if it’s ovulation/ When you’re holding a hammer, everything looks like a nail,” Lorde sings in the first verse, over a pulsing, distorted synth.
Later, she acknowledges that her romantic interest doesn’t “deal much in love and affection” before telling them she believes “there could be a connection“.
The pop star then echoes her recent comments on her gender evolution, telling us: “Some days I’m a woman, some days I’m a man.” She continues with the theme of rebirth, adding: “I might have been born again/ I’m ready to feel like I don’t have thе answers/ There’s pеace in the madness over our heads/ Let it carry me on.”
An official music video for ‘Hammer’ – filmed in London’s Hampstead Heath – is due to premiere at 2:00pm BST today (June 20). A preview clip shows Lorde with pigtail braids, sitting amongst pigeons in the park and running down a hill. Tune in above.
The new track follows the nostalgic ‘Virgin’ lead single ‘What Was That’ and the intimate ‘Man Of The Year’. Lorde recently previewed more new songs from the album by surprising fans at a listening party in London.
One of the cuts Lorde debuted was ‘Clear Blue’, which she previously revealed was about “unprotected sex and taking a pregnancy test”.
Meanwhile, Lorde is set to embark on her UK, European and North American ‘Ultrasound’ tour later this year. She has promised fans that the forthcoming gigs “could be our masterpiece”. You can find any remaining tickets here (UK/Ireland).
There is currently speculation over a potential secret set from Lorde at Glastonbury 2025 next weekend. She is rumoured for the opening ‘TBA’ slot on the Woodies stage next Friday – the same day ‘Virgin’ is released.
