Soccer games don't typically have halftime shows, but FIFA isn't the kind of organization that'll let a marketing opportunity go to waste. This year, the World Cup is coming to the United States, which promises to be a clusterfuck of gigantic proportions, especially given our current government's enthusiastic willingness to ban travelers from wherever. But anyone who makes it through our fascistic customs process and splurges for the insanely expensive World Cup Final tickets will get a performance from a bunch of global superstars.
The World Cup Final goes down July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and it'll feature performances from Madonna, Shakira, and BTS. Global Citizen is producing the show, and it'll supposedly raise money for children's education. Coldplay frontman Chris Martin is being presented as the halftime show's curator, whatever that could possibly mean. He's not scheduled to perform, but I'll be shocked if he doesn't pop up onstage. Madonna, Shakira, and Chris Martin are all Super Bowl Halftime Show veterans, while BTS play stadiums all over the planet, so they should all be well-prepared for this particular type of media circus.
In the video where he announces the halftime show, we see that Chris Martin doesn't actually do much curating. Instead, he responds to suggestions from various Muppets. Cookie Monster, for instance, requests BTS, as this week's Number Ones subject "Butter" is both his favorite song and cookie ingredient. The casts of both Sesame Street and The Muppet Show are involved, so I guess this is a crossover episode. See it for yourself below.
