Singapore authorities are investigating Massive Attack after the trip-hop pioneers reportedly shouted “Free Palestine” and displayed a Palestinian flag during their concert on Wednesday, July 29th. Footage from the show at The Star Performing Arts Centre has surfaced online of Massive Attack members holding up a Palestinian flag on stage. On Reddit, an attendee reported cheers of “Free, Free Palestine!” The band also told the crowd that they had pulled a song from the intended setlist due to “local laws.” State-owned news network Channel NewsAsia has confirmed that police and the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) are investigating “a possible breach of license conditions” after “reports were lodged.” The Singapore government has notoriously strict rules on public speech, prohibiting the public display of foreign national emblems, such as flags, without a permit or exemption. Those found in violation face the possibility of a fine of up to S$500 ($387), up to six months in jail, or both penalties.
