We’re back with another Matty Healy classic today, folks. It’s a Mad Libs-style controversy: On Tuesday night (December 3rd), The 1975 frontman took to Twitter and threatened to dox his own fans after they expressed disappointment over his fiancé for drinking raw milk — all in the midst of a spat with Azealia Banks. Come get your word soup while it’s hot!
In a now-deleted tweet, Healy clumsily attempted to defend his fiancé, Gabbriette, who was pulled into the fray. “If I see one little shit bag Twitter barista say ONE thing about my Gabi, EVER, I will use my mental illness to full affect and I will dox and fuck you up.” Threatening anyone isn’t always the vibe… but threatening your own fans feels like a Matty Healy Special.
And while most reasonable people know it’s never wise to get into a Twitter battle with Azealia Banks, Healy has never quite toted himself as a reasonable person. Things kicked off when Healy attempted to defend Charli XCX (his bandmate’s fiancé, for those keeping track) after Banks, unprompted, shared her thoughts on Charli’s changed appearance in recent years, pushing Healy to reply with, “All the women you attack seem to be culturally relevant, attractive, divisive and NICE people. I think this makes you jealous cos you’re so talented but everything else about you is a failure. Just rap bro.” What could go wrong from here?
As expected, things quickly devolved into a classic back-and-forth between two especially hotheaded individuals: Banks said Healy looked like Frankenstein. Healy threatened to slap Banks, who then potentially teetered into homophobic territory by accusing Healy of being “too busy kissing men onstage” to defend his fiancé from physical harm. Healy then said Banks was being “mean,” which isn’t a great reply, if we’re being honest. Standard Tuesday night fare!
The chaos ended in the funniest way possible, with Healy admitting he was scared and backing down.
Gabbriette, something of an It Girl, is on recent record embracing the raw milk trend, which many see as a conservative dogwhistle.
