MF DOOM fans rejoice: the masked and enigmatic rapper’s instrumental collection Special Herbs will be released on September 5th via Metalface Records and Rhymesayers Entertainment under his alias Metal Fingers. Pre-orders for the Metal Fingers Presents: Special Herbs collection, plus exclusive merchandise, are available now through DOOM’s web store Gas Drawls.
Special Herbs is a massive ten volume collection of DOOM’s instrumental experimentations which he steadily released from 2001 to 2005. In 2006, it was released as a full collection and later reissued in 2012. Across its 82 songs, Special Herbs includes songs like “Saffron” (the instrumental for “Doomsday”) and “Lavender Buds,” but also deeper cuts like “Valerian Root” and “Burdock Root.”
Metal Fingers Presents: Special Herbs will be released on colored vinyl and with “rolling paper” gatefold jackets. The collection will also be available on CD and cassette, plus, an exclusive line of merchandise will be available for purchase. That merch includes a Super7 ReAction Figure, sweatshirts, rolling papers and trays, and more.
MF DOOM, born Daniel Dumile, began his hip-hop career as Zev Love X in the ’90s, rapping alongside his brother Dingilizwe “DJ Subroc” Dumile in the duo KMD before he was tragically killed in a car accident at 19 years old. Dumile dropped the Zev Love X name, went dark for several years before reemerging in a metal mask as MF DOOM releasing his debut album Operation: Doomsday in 1999.
He released music under several monikers, including King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughn, and DOOM, plus collaborated with artists like Madlib on the duo Madvillian and Danger Mouse on Danger Doom. MF DOOM passed away in 2020 at 49 years old from angiodema, a severe reaction to a blood pressure medication.
Special Herbs is the latest reissue of the rapper’s discography over the past few years. In 2023 the hip-hop brother duo KMD (with DOOM credited a Zev Love X) saw their sophomore record Black Bastards reissued for its 30th anniversary. MM.. FOOD, DOOM’s fifth album was re-released for its 20th anniversary last year.
