Neil Young Invites Trump to Summer Tour “If There Is Not Martial Law by Then”

Ever since Bruce Springsteen bruised Donald Trump’s fragile ego with his defiant onstage remarks, numerous rockers have voiced their support for The Boss. One such ally is Neil Young, who declared, “I am not scared of [Trump]. Neither are the rest of us.” In a new post on his Neil Young Archives, however, the musician has extended an invitation for Trump to come catch his summer tour — though he added the caveat “if there is not martial law by then.”

“We will not be doing a political show,” Young wrote. “We will be playing the music we love for all of us to enjoy together. President Trump, you are invited. Come and hear our music just as you did for decades.”

Young is referencing Tump’s well-documented appreciation for his music. Trump once told Rolling Stone, “[Young’s] got something very special. I’ve listened to his music for years…” The two had even met on occasion, including during performances at Trump-owned properties.

Of course, things have soured over the last few years. Young sued Trump for using “Rockin’ in the Free World” at rallies, and wondered if his criticisms of the Trump administration might lead to him being barred from re-entering the US.

So it’s no surprise Young’s invitation isn’t exactly an 0live branch. Elsewhere in his post, he warned, “Our country and our way of life, that which our fathers and theirs fought for, is now threatened by our government. This is not what we voted for. This is our new reality. Our government is out of control, not standing for us. You can stand up for American values this summer, for our children and theirs.”

He concluded, “Bruce Springsteen and many others will be in our country this summer, there for you, playing your favorite music, songs like ‘Born in the USA,'” an anti-war song still frequently misconstrued as a patriotic declaration. “We are proud to be who we are, and we must never let our government forget.”

Reading between the lines, Young seems to be daring Trump to actually listen to the music he claims to love, rather than a genuine welcome to an old fan. Maybe he’ll even play his recent track “Let’s Roll Again,” with its pointed lyric, “If you’re a fascist, get a Tesla.” See what happens by grabbing tickets to Young’s upcoming tour dates here.

Meanwhile, Trump recently called for an investigation into Springsteen and other musicians who supported Kamal Harris — which could arguably include Young. The thin threats haven’t scared off Springsteen, however; not long after Trumps tantrum remarks, Springsteen released The Land of Hope and Dreams EP, featuring live renditions of “Long Walk Home,” “My City of Ruins,” and a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Chimes of Freedom” interspersed with his speeches condeming Trump.
