Way back in 2014, k.d. lang reached out to fellow singer-songwriters Neko Case and Laura Veirs to see if they wanted to make an album as a trio. Case and Veirs enthusiastically agreed, so they all started working together in Portland for a couple of years. The three of them became a group known as case/lang/veirs, and they toured together after releasing a self-titled album, which came out on this day in 2016. Today, case/lang/veirs celebrate that anniversary by announcing a deluxe edition and sharing a previously unreleased song.
Neko Case wrote the bulk of the newly released case/lang/veirs track "Accidental Tattoo," about what happens "if you listen past the words and make them about you." Case sings the song's virtuosic lead vocal over a lush, rich instrumental bed, while k.d. lang and Laura Veirs coo soft backups. In a press release, lang says:
"Accidental Tattoo” is a song that came from a sudden creative spark that happened between all three of us a couple of years ago. Neko wrote the lyrics, Laura and I organized Neko’s poetry, adding arrangements and intertwining it with melodies and music. And then I worked closely with Larry Goldings on the actual production to fasten all of it into the song you hear now.

Later this year, case/lang/veirs will release a version of their album that'll include live versions of every track from the original LP, recorded during their 2016 tour, as well as "Accidental Tattoo." It's out 9/4 on Anti-.
