Netflix Announces Assassin's Creed Live Action SeriesNetflix / Assassin’s Creed

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed is taking another stab at Hollywood.

Nearly five years in the making, Netflix has announced it has greenlit a live-action adaptation of Ubisoft’s hit video game franchise Assassin’s Creed, as part of the streaming giant’s 2020 agreement with Ubisoft.

The streaming giant also shared that Emmy nominees Roberto Patino (DMZWestworldSons of Anarchy) and David Wiener (HaloHomecoming, The Killing) will serve as creators, showrunners, and executive producers.

Wiener and Patino gave some insight into what fans could expect from the series in a joint statement.

Assassin’s Creed is a high-octane thriller centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions — one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will,” the forthcoming show’s logline reads. The series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny.

We’ve been fans of Assassin’s Creed since its release in 2007. Every day we work on this show, we come away excited and humbled by the possibilities that Assassin’s Creed opens to us. Beneath the scope, the spectacle, the parkour, and the thrills is a baseline for the most essential kind of human story — about people searching for purpose, struggling with questions of identity and destiny, and faith. It is about power and violence and sex and greed and vengeance.

But more than anything, this is a show about the value of human connection, across cultures, across time. And it’s about what we stand to lose as a species when those connections break. We’ve got an amazing team behind us with the folks at Ubisoft and our champions at Netflix, and we’re committed to creating something undeniable for fans all over the planet.

This Is Not The First Time Assassin’s Creed Took A Leap of Faith Into Hollywood

In 2016, for those who may have forgotten, there was the Assassin’s Creed film directed by Justin Kurzel and starring Michael Fassbender, Michael K. Williams, Jeremy Irons, and more.

Unfortunately, we were still in a time when film adaptations of video games were subpar, so this redo of Assassin’s Creed is very much welcomed.

Additionally, Netflix has a strong track record with its video game adaptations, thanks to series like CastlevaniaCyberpunk: Edgerunners, and the upcoming Splinter Cell: Deathwatch. Arcane, based on Riot Games’ League of Legends gaming franchise.

So, consider us optimistic about this one.
