New James Bond will be “very young” as Amazon reportedly plans “retro” reboot

James Bond could be going in a new direction, with a younger actor and a retro setting, according to an interview with British actor Daniel Mays.

The search is on for the next James Bond, who will replace Daniel Craig after his final performance in 2021’s No Time To Die. Last month, it was announced that the long-serving producers of 007, Barbara Broccoli and her half-brother Michael G. Wilson, had stepped away from the creative process and handed over control to Amazon, ending over 60 years of the Broccoli family’s control of the Bond estate.

The move has sparked speculation as to what the world of 007 may look like moving forward, and Mays, best known for the TV series Ashes To Ashes and the film Rogue One, has shared a rumour he has heard.

On the We’re Not Getting Any Younger podcast, he said: “Bond is a big deal right, that going to Amazon … I heard a rumour they’re going to cast someone very young and go sort of back to the origins”. He continued: “They’re going to sort of ’60s, you’re going to have all the retro cars and that sort of stuff – and start again. I think that would be kind of cool”.

No casting, plot points, or release date has been officially announced for the next Bond adventure. Amy Pascal and David Heyman, producers of the Spider-man and Harry Potter films respectively, have been confirmed as the replacements for Wilson and Broccoli.

Recently, former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan shared that he would prefer to play Harry Potter character Professor Dumbledore over returning to the spy franchise as M. Meanwhile, Brosnan’s MobLand co-star, Dame Helen Mirren, has said she isn’t a fan of the Bond series and believes that they are “born out of profound sexism”.
