On top of releasing ‘Madra’, which was named one of NME‘s Top 100 Albums of the year, NewDad have had a stacked 2024. After the artwork for their ‘Madra’ cover went viral in China, the band went on to play slots at Glastonbury and All Points East.

They were also due to play at SXSW, but were amongst the many Irish bands to pull out of the festival after it was revealed the US Army and defence contractor RTX (Raytheon), which has supplied weapons to Israel, were both a “super sponsor” of the festival.

We caught up with NewDad at Glastonbury last year, where they told us about touring with 5SOS’ Luke Hemmings. “We are both 5SOS fans, so it was so much fun to tour with Luke,” former bassist Cara Joshi said. “It was strange and so exciting.”

“Usually, when you’re a support band, people don’t pay too much attention to you,” singer Julie Dawson added. “But these fans were showing up so early and seemed so excited by our music. They were really keen to see us and made such an effort.”

Dawson also went solo with her own record, telling NME her own music was “definitely more pop-leaning, but still with all those heavy guitar and bass sounds. There’s a lot more synth sounds going on too. There’s a lot more going on, but still with that classic NewDad sound.”
