Nikki Nair Signs To dh2, Announces New EP The Sick Dimension

Earlier this year, Nikki Nair collaborated with the Avalanches on the single “Together.” Now he’s back with new music of his own. Yesterday, he announced that he had joined George Daniel’s dance-focused Dirty Hit sublabel, dh2, and said he attempted to make house music but failed. Still, he “ended up with four mistakes that I will package as an EP,” he deadpanned in a funny social post.

Today, Nair shared the first single from the forthcoming EP The Sick Dimension. It’s called “Default Mode,” and it sounds like a cartoon alien trying to write a gripping love song. The words “I’m always thinking about you” repeat in a squeaky, plasticky voice. As the song rumbles on, it circles a romantic sentiment, eventually settling into something robotic yet feral. It’s cool.

“This record was me using all of the weird gear that I have, and getting back into digging for old house music,” Nair said in a press release about the forthcoming EP. “In my mind, I’m making normal house music, but when I get feedback, I guess it does not sound like normal house music to most people.”
